Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Surprisingly enjoyable! I like the story, characters and actors so far and I'm looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

Beacon 23

- New scifi! Yay! Great visuals outside the station.
- I think Lena Headey has had some botox done. Her lips are huge and really distracting. Kind of like fish's. It keeps striking me in every scene of every episode she's in. But that doesn't happen in Game of Thrones or Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so she must have botox done at some point after GOT.
- I'm not sure Lena Headey is the right choice to play Aster. She's so low energy and I feel like Aster's character should be more dynamic.
- The guy playing Halen is doing a good job.
- The series is weirdly boring. The only episode that I truly enjoyed is the one with where Barbara Hershey guest-stars. That was written really well and the questions and themes were interesting. Almost like it's from an entirely different series.
- All the other episodes I only just barely made it through, with lots of stopping and starting in every episode.
- The series has a weird way of bringing in random characters that are written like they're the series' main character(s) and who I get the feeling we're supposed to care about but who then get booted out at the end of the episode. They may or may not survive and re-appear later.
- I can't make an over-all picture of universe. Apparently humans have colonized hundreds of planets? But what's QTA? What's The Column? World building is unclear.
- The central mystery are the weird Rocks and the uh, anomaly, I guess?? If so, first season is done and we've learned next to nothing about them.
- Everything feels like its thrown on the wall to see what bits stick. Like there's no cohesive whole behind it all.
- The space pictures are great! The main reason I kept watching I guess.
- I don't know why I didn't quit it after a few episodes. It's boring with weird choices and pacing.

Orphan Black: Echoes

I really really wanted this series to be as good as the original is, but two episodes in and it's failing so badly. The writing is subpar and the acting ranges from bad to non-existant. I never thought Keeley Hawes could act badly, but here she is, proving me wrong. And while I've never liked Krysten Ritter in anything I've seen her (I quit Jessica Jones after about three episodes because of her), here she is just awful and the writing for her character is really bad. I don't like any of the characters except for Jules but even that character seems like I've seen her a million times before. I really want to like the show but I'm not sure I can make it many more episodes if the writing doesn't improve drastically.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2.01 The Broken Circle Thoughts

I'm so happy to have this ST back on my screen 💖 Seeing all the characters again was like meeting old friends after a long while. I thought it was a fun episode! I could've done without the weird, unnecesary fight scenes with M'Benga and Chapel and their space fight serum (I'm assuming it's a bad thing because it's not used in the future). The fight scenes were filmed awkwardly in slow motion and looked not believable to me. And for Klingons, the couple of dozen of Klingons went down quick and easy. Speaking of Klingons, I'm very happy to have more normal looking Klingons again instead of those weird looking ones on DSC - something about the DSC facial prosthetics look very unnatural and limiting like the actor can't speak or move their facial muscles properly. I did think it was an interesting choice to have Pike sit out the episode. I guess next one will be with him and Una. Uhura has graduated and is an Ensign now :D Commander Pelia seems like an interesting addition to the crew. I wonder if The Broken Circle syndicate is going to be a problem later on - the syndicate was weirdly only in the background despite the episode being named after it. What we got seemed more bunch of random thugs working loosely together instead of motivated, organized and efficient group that it must be in order to smuggle in and build a Federation starship in secret.

Can't wait for episode two!

Also, I love the official SNW posters - they're so colorful 🥰

Will Trent TV Series & Books

Will Trent TV Series & Books

I finished watching the first season of the tv series Will Trent last week. I used to the read the books by Karin Slaughter the series is based on, as well as the author's Sara Linton books several years ago - all that had been translated to Finnish at the time - and liked them a lot. I read probably about a dozen of them all in all, across the two series but then run out of them and sort of forgot about it. So when I saw a few months ago that a tv series based on the Will Trent books was coming out, I was immediately curious but not very hopeful (I have such bad experience with Kathryn Reichs's Temperance Brennan books turned into an awful tv series).

Turns out I enjoy Will Trent the tv series very much! I love the diverse casting, especially Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell and Sonja Sohn (who has always been good in all the roles I've seen her in) as Amanda Wagner. Sonja Sohn's portrayal of Amanda particularly matches my memory of the character from the books, but I think all three (Iantha, Sonja and Ramón Rodríguez as Will Trent) do an excellent job in their respective roles. The writers and the actors have done a really outstanding job remaining true to the spirits and personalities of these characters from the books even if their ethnicity is different in the tv show.

What baffles me is Angie Polaski (played by Erika Christensen, also doing a good job) because my memory of her is that Angie is pretty much just evil and certainly not one of the good guy. I can't remember at all whether she's a cop in the books too, like in the show? The tv character is messed up, but she's trying to be and do good and is certainly one of the good guys. Her relationship with with Will seems co-dependent but nothing like the abusive, destructive relationship I remember from the books. I just wonder why she's been changed so much when the other main characters are true in spirit to their book counterparts? I don't mind, I like tv Angie! If they'd kept Angie as she in the books, I wouldn't like that she has so much screen time (being one of the three main characters) because she'd be so unpleasant to watch in an unfun way.

Spurred on by the tv series, I search out a Will Trent/Sara Linton book I hadn't read yet and last night I finished reading The Silent Wife and I was reminded how much I liked Slaughter's writing! Surely there's now more books in both the series that have come out, I can't wait to find out. While I was reading, I noticed I was seeing Sonja Sohn as Amanda and Iantha as Faith so I guess their performances really impressed me! I like it. I didn't remember that Lena Adams was so incompetent! In the "8 years ago" portions of the book, she made serious, disastrous mistakes one after another directly leading to a death of a witness, a disaster with a suspect with serious injuries to her boss and the suspect, and her boss and Lena herself and possibly other officers having to lie to get a what turnout to be a pedophile (who had been preparing to kidnap a child, as they realized in the middle of action) off the street. All that in just one book. I can't believe she's still a cop in the book's present!

On the other hand, the personal problem between Will and Sara in The Silent Wife was stupid. All they had to do was to talk to each other.

I'm very much looking forward to season 2 of Will Trent, and also looking forward to reading the Will Trent and Sara Linton books that I've missed. I'm very glad to have re-discovered these books!

TV Thoughts - The Rig (2023)

The premise of this tv series sounded fun and there are several good & familiar actors in it (Iain Glenn, Emily Hampshire, Martin Compston, Mark Addy, Owen Teale, Mark Bonnar) so I was excited to watch this. Turns out that the writing is abysmal!

All the characters keep making stupid decisions and take stupid actions time after time, both tiny and big. Especially Owen Teale's character - that one is one genuinely stupid man! People die because of him and there are never any real consequences to him and nobody ever blames him. Just incredible. Each new episode seems like it's in competition to outdo the previous episode's stupid actions.

The pacing is much too slow and the series is at least two episodes too long. I think it's implied that the entire series takes place over two days (or three?), but if feels more like two weeks. The idea behind the mysterious happenings is interesting (and one I haven't seen before) and the actors are doing their best with what they've been given, but the writing is so, so bad. The series ends on a cliffhanger in clear hopes for a second series, and apparently series two has been greenlit.

Those actors I listed above and the idea is what kept me watching to the end, but honestly, I'm not sure whether I'll bother with the second series. The writing would have to improve by a large margin to make it truly worth my while.
