TV Thoughts – The Rig (2023)

The premise of this tv series sounded fun and there are several good & familiar actors in it (Iain Glenn, Emily Hampshire, Martin Compston, Mark Addy, Owen Teale, Mark Bonnar) so I was excited to watch this. Turns out that the writing is abysmal!

All the characters keep making stupid decisions and take stupid actions time after time, both tiny and big. Especially Owen Teale’s character – that one is one genuinely stupid man! People die because of him and there are never any real consequences to him and nobody ever blames him. Just incredible. Each new episode seems like it’s in competition to outdo the previous episode’s stupid actions.

The pacing is much too slow and the series is at least two episodes too long. I think it’s implied that the entire series takes place over two days (or three?), but if feels more like two weeks. The idea behind the mysterious happenings is interesting (and one I haven’t seen before) and the actors are doing their best with what they’ve been given, but the writing is so, so bad. The series ends on a cliffhanger in clear hopes for a second series, and apparently series two has been greenlit.

Those actors I listed above and the idea is what kept me watching to the end, but honestly, I’m not sure whether I’ll bother with the second series. The writing would have to improve by a large margin to make it truly worth my while.

Star Trek: Picard The Series As A Whole Thoughts

Conclusion: There are two things I truly liked in the whole series – first is Seven Of Nine’s arc through the series – I don’t like that she got so side-lined in season 3 but what little she had was good. And the other thing is the Borg Queen/Jurati storyline in season 2.

More thoughts behind the cut…

Star Trek: Picard 3.07 Part 7: Dominion Thoughts

I’m disappointed how little 7of9 has had screen time in S3 – I do like her personal plot this season and general personal arc in all through the three seasons of PIC very much, but she’s had so little to do this season! And a lot of it has been stuff any character could do. I feel like PIC has forgotten that she has a vast knowledge in science and scientific experience and PIC is mostly treating her as an action hero 😐 But the personal stuff she has had, has been good.

There’s a few spoilers behind the cut.

Star Trek: Discovery Ends After 5 Seasons & Star Trek: Picard 3.03 Seventeen Seconds

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek DSC has been cancelled. It will end after the upcoming season 5, which will air sometime in 2024.

I’m… not sad, exactly, but maybe wistful? More in the sense of that there’ll be one less (live-action) Trek in the air, than missing these particular characters and stories. But maybe there’ll be a new (live-action) Trek series coming up! I will miss seeing Sonequa Martin-Green on my TV regularly but she was in TWD and then in DSC and I’m sure she’ll head another tv series soon. I’ll keep my fingers crossed it’ll also be something in the scifi/fantasy genre because that’s my favorite!

I think the characters have been in a pretty good place the last few seasons (because the show obviously isn’t going to address in any real way all the horrible trauma the crew as a whole and the characters as individual have suffered what with war, jumping 1000 years into the future and losing all their loved ones/everything they know, dealing with universe ending threats several times in about a span of five years at the most I’d guess). There are finished character & plot arcs and assuming season 5 follows the style of the last few seasons, with a self-contained season long arc, I think it’ll be in a pretty good place to end things. At least I don’t feel that anything is left open and dangling as the show stands right now and I assume season will be more of the same in that regard. Let’s hope there’ll be no earth shattering cliffhangers in the final episode in the desperate hope to get the cancellation cancelled but that they end it well.

Also five seasons is nothing to scoff at! A lot of series never get past one, so DSC did something right even though not everyone loves it. I myself will always be glad it exists because it certainly gave us Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and probably Star Trek: Picard too šŸ˜€
